A field guide to beam mount installations for sex swings— and why your bedroom is the least interesting place to use one.
There’s a version of this swing that lives in a closet with a hook in the ceiling and gets taken down before company arrives. I respect that version. I’ve lived that version.
But there’s another version. One that goes where you go. That gets rigged in places the manufacturer never imagined.
That version involves beam mounts. And once you understand what they actually do, the bedroom starts to feel a little small.
The bedroom is the least interesting room in the house.
What a Beam Mount Actually Is
A beam mount is exactly what it sounds like: two heavy-duty straps that drape over an exposed beam, rafter, or any structural overhead element, with D-rings hanging below for your swing’s carabiner to clip onto. No drilling. No hardware. No asking permission from your landlord or the Airbnb host who’s definitely going to see your review.
The setup takes about three minutes. The takedown takes less. And the list of places where an exposed beam exists — if you start paying attention — is longer than you think.
I started paying attention years ago. This is what I found.
The Airbnb Cabin

This is the obvious one, and it’s obvious because it works perfectly. A-frame cabins, log construction, ski chalets — half the vacation rental inventory in North America has exposed beams. Structural, solid, exactly the right height.
An airbnb with exposed porch beams was the installation that made me realize we were sitting on something. Not just a product. A whole category of trips that nobody had named yet.
If your Airbnb has exposed beams in the listing photos, congratulations. You just found the real amenity.
A Forest in Southern Florida

This one surprises people. The beam mount doesn’t require a beam, technically. It requires something beam-like: a solid, horizontal overhead structure that isn’t going anywhere.
A mature tree branch qualifies. A pergola qualifies. A wooden shade structure qualifies. The strap system distributes the load; what matters is that the anchor point is rated for it.
Florida gets a bad reputation for being flat and graceless. Parts of Florida definitely are. But there are corners of it that are genuinely wild, and swinging from a tree with nothing around you but subtropical forest and the sounds of things you can’t quite identify — that’s a different thing entirely than a bedroom ceiling.

A Balcony in Antigua, Guatemala

I want to be precise about this one, because the detail matters.
To the left: Volcán de Agua. Dormant. Massive. The kind of presence that makes you feel appropriately small.
To the right: Volcán de Fuego. Active. On the night we were there, you could see it erupting.
From the sex swing.
I have been asked many times what the appeal of traveling with a swing is. I find the question harder to answer when I’m looking at an erupting volcano from a balcony in Antigua. Some things just make the case for themselves.
The balcony had an overhead structure — a covered outdoor corridor, colonial architecture, thick wooden beams. The mount went up in three minutes. The view did the rest.

A Resort in Orlando, Florida
Who says Orlando is only for kids.
Resort architecture is underrated for this. Covered pool cabanas. Outdoor pavilions. Pergola-style shade structures over patios. The design philosophy of a resort is, essentially, “create beautiful overhead structures in outdoor spaces,” and beam mounts are delighted by that philosophy.
The trick with a resort is discretion and timing. Early morning. Late at night. A private cabana if it’s on offer. You didn’t hear this from me, but if you do get caught and the person genuinely thinks you are a rockstar, drop my name!
What You’re Looking For When You Scout a Location
Once you start doing this, you develop an eye for it. You walk into a space and you look up before you look around. Here’s what qualifies:
Exposed wooden beams in any rental property. A-frames, cabins, barns, converted spaces. If the beam is structural and the wood is solid, it works.
Pergolas and outdoor shade structures. The horizontal members are exactly what the strap is designed for. Test it. Pull on it. If it doesn’t move, you’re good.
Tree limbs — but be selective. You want a mature, live limb that’s at least as thick as your forearm and grows more or less horizontally. Dead wood doesn’t qualify. When in doubt, don’t.
Overhead structures in covered outdoor spaces: pavilions, covered patios, carport-style structures, pool houses. These are built to handle weather load. They can handle this.
What doesn’t qualify: drywall, drop ceilings, anything decorative, hollow beams, or anything you’re not completely confident about. The mount is only as good as what it’s mounted to.
You walk into a space and you start looking up. That’s the whole skill.
A Note on Discretion (and Security Cameras)

Leave every space exactly as you found it. If you moved anything to make room, put it back. If you used an existing hook or anchor point, restore it. If you borrowed a crescent wrench from the groundskeeper, return it with a thank-you.
Beam mounts leave no trace by design. The straps go over and come off. There’s nothing to patch, nothing to explain, nothing that shows up as a line item on your checkout bill.
That said: know your surroundings. Balconies have angles. Resort common areas have staff. Outdoor spaces that feel private sometimes aren’t. The couple in Cancun who rigged their swing to the balcony eye hooks — the hooks that held the planters — found out afterward that there was a security camera pointed directly at them.
The hotel manager’s response, translated from Spanish: “the creativity of men has no words.”
He deleted the footage after two weeks. Allegedly.
Be thoughtful. Be discreet. And maybe check where the cameras are pointed before you get started, especially in an airbnb.
The Part Where I Give You Permission
Most people think of a sex swing as a bedroom upgrade. Something you install once and use at home.
That’s fine. That works. I’m not knocking it.
But the beam mount exists because some of us looked at a covered balcony in Antigua with two volcanoes visible from it and thought: that’s too good to leave back home.
Your bedroom will still be there when you get back. The erupting volcano might not wait.
